Tuesday 1st November

On Tuesday 1st November we are having a talk on Perry making by Tom Oliver of Olivers cider and perry.  He is bringing along samples for us to try and the Committee are providing nibbles.  Everyone welcome - visitors £2.00
Tom says
“It’s amazing to think that before the ‘Truck Act’ of 1887, nearly all Herefordshire farms had apple and pear orchards and would have partly paid their workforce in cider and perry. If you made the best cider, you got the best workers.
Cider and Perry have moved with the times and now are not just the drink of the landed gentry and country folk.
Sophisticated, well blended ciders and perries can be perfect partners with a wide variety of dishes, including these delicious mussels”

Jack Willgoss from Wildgoose Nursery, Millichope Park, Munslow, is coming to talk to us on late summer colour.  See the web site here.  He is calling his talk 'A late summer love affair'.
Jack and partner Laura specialise in hardy, perennial Violas, with a continually expanding collection of over 150 varieties, comprising of old favourites and the best new introductions.  They have written on their web site -
"The Bouts Viola collection was established in 1978 by Mark and Stephanie Roberts.  Their passion and dedication to ‘all things Viola’ has not only helped to preserve many old and rare varieties that might otherwise have been lost, but also led to the introduction of many new varieties, of which Elaine Quin, Perry’s Pride, Mark’s Dainty and Isabel are to name but a few.
In August 2011 Mark and Stephanie Roberts retired and we, here at Wildegoose Nursery, have been fortunate enough to take on this wonderful collection.
The idea for Wildegoose Nursery began back at RHS Garden Wisley in 2006 where we met as trainees and dreamt of having a beautiful garden and nursery business of our own. Well 5 years on the garden project has started with our move into the walled garden at Millichope Park and the violas are doing well in their new home in the beautiful Shropshire Hills."

Tuesday 3rd May 2016

Rob Coles of Meadow Farm Garden and Nursery, Feckenham is coming to talk to us on Fostering a Wildlife Meadow.  See his web site here

Rob says
'We have one and a quarter acres of wildflower meadow which we now manage as a nature reserve. The meadow has not been ploughed for well over 110 years and is typical of unimproved Worcestershire grassland, now becoming very scarce. We planted two small copses of native trees in the spring of 2000 to increase the diversity of the habitat, and these have now matured into young woodland. We have also planted hundreds of cowslips and primroses, all raised from seed from the one or two plants which already existed in the meadow, and we plant more each year.

The meadow is home to badgers, rabbits, mice, moles, voles and a huge range of birdlife. It also supports many butterflies and moths including a colony of Marbled White butterflies. The grass is species rich with many common wild flowers in abundance. We maintain a mown path through the grass to give easy access to enjoy the wildlife and the extensive views of the beautiful Worcestershire countryside to the south and west.'

Caynham and District Gardening Society are visiting their beautiful garden, meadow and nursery on
Tuesday 5th July.  We will be travelling by coach.  Details will be given at the meeting.
